Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. She was an evening nurse in order to give her mother the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay quickly fell in love with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
